One of my favorite party tricks when it comes to weight-loss, came to me as I was mid-cooking and realized how much salt some recipes required. Salt is the enemy, something most people completely overlook. According to nutritionists, we should only be consuming an average of one teaspoon of salt per day – too much sodium will cause water retention, and can also be a factor in future kidney disease.

I started using cayenne pepper on everything, as an experiment, to add flavor to my food, whenever needed. It started with my sunny-side-up breakfast eggs and continued on to salads, marinades and soups. Now I just generally avoid salt altogether – a factor that makes me feel less guilty on those days when I just HAVE to splurge on junk like potato chips or flavored crackers, which are absolute sodium-bombs and viciously unforgiving.

If you’re not a big fan of the spicy, and cayenne should be used sparingly and with a light hand, you can always try experimenting with other spices. The bottom line is, when it comes to flavoring food, you can still cook up something that smells and tastes amazing, without taking a dive into a salt mine. A little, goes a long way!
