UNITED WE STAND #WOOTW (WorkOut Of The Week)

Today's #WOOTW is not really a work out but a tip. As much as I am one of those weirdos who actually enjoys working out, I too get bouts of extreme laziness and lack of motivation. I found that the best way to rid myself of these feelings is to work out with friends. You can have a permanent buddy, or you can invite different friends to different work outs as I usually do. This way, you are forced ot get a work out in for the following reasons- You actually feel more "ganado" because you are all motivating each other or you actually don't wanna embarrass yourself by being that one friend who tries to influence all the others to have a Pancakes and Bacon breakfast instead of going to the gym and fails. LOL. Either way, the chances of you saying you are too lazy or busy to work out decreases when you have one or two other people with you. Try it! Build a network of "fitness friends" and make work out plans with them, and I promise you will find going to the gym will become not only easier, but more fun as well.




IPPUDO #SoulFoodSaturday



I am by no means a Ramen Expert, but I think I eat enough to be able to tell if a steaming hot noodle bowl is good or not. I don't add a lot of stuff to my ramen, and unlike most people I know who like their spicy tantanmen, I like mine devoid of spice, but packed with flavor. I like to really taste the broth made by boiling and simmering pork bones, and I like my soup on the creamier, fuller bodied side. More often that not, I just have some chashu pork and soft boiled egg, and occasionally, some nori.

There's OK ramen, and there's "Can we eat here again tomorrow?" ramen. To be completely honest, out of all the bowls I've tried EVER, I've only felt the latter about two. One was during my last trip to Sydney and the other was Ippudo, which I first tried in New York. Unfortunately, I didn't get to eat it again the next day, and I had to wait a few years later to have it in Hong Kong. Walking around TST last year, I look up and what do you know, I spot Ippudo. I insisted on dinner there, and told my friend that despite the thirty minute wait, we absolutely could not eat anywhere else. I was starving after a day of window shopping, so aside from the Shiromaru Motoaji (aka what they are famous for) with tamago, I also ordered a few other plates like wings and salmon. Super Takaw Mata, but despite not finishing everything because I totally over-ordered, everything was deliciously satisfying.

Ok, so what is the point of this post? Well, aside from the fact that ramen is one of my favorite comfort foods, and also because food memories are probably the most vivid memories I have, I also found out Ippudo is opening in Manila- and VERY SOON. I'm beyond excited and the best part is, it will be at Mega Fashion Hall, aka MegaMall, aka a ten minute drive from my place. I CAN'T WAIT!

RED ALERT #BeautyBuzz



It was only a couple of years ago that I started wearing red lipstick. I always liked it, but never though it looked good on me. I always felt like my skin looked weird when I wore anything other than my usual nudes. As a Beauty Editor for many years, I would receive so much make-up that it was inevitable that I had an entire collection of just red lipsticks. It took a lot of experimenting and trial and error until I found the kind of red I like best and I think suits me most. For me, it's matte all the way, and it has to be a BRICK RED (Warm, orange tones) like MAC's Marrakesh or an OXBLOOD RED (On the Burgundy side with purples and browns) like MAC's Media.

There are so-called rules to how to pick the perfect red, but through the years they have been broken and there are always exceptions, so I've learned to stop following them and just go with what makes me feel most beautiful. BAYANI BREW LEMONGRASS PANDAN ICED TEA #TryThis



Not much of a fan of sodas and all things artificial, but suffering from a major sweet tooth, I always end up concocting my own iced tea. But today, pressed for time and nearing starvation, I decided to indulge. Bayani Brew is conveniently sold at my new office, so I had to try it.. and it didn't disappoint.

Made without artificial colors and flavors, this lemongrass-pandan flavored tea hits the spot. The serving size on the label is quite small, so if you count the entire bottle as a serving, its a little over 70 calories per bottle, which isn't bad at all. How many calories are in a can of soda? Exactly.

The L Word #FEELINGSFEATURE

The older I get the more complicated the whole love thing seems to get, and yet, the simpler my needs become. Sure, we all have our list of things we want, our deal breakers and all that, but the truth of the matter is that I just want real, unconditional love, to be able to give it back and knowing someone has got my back no matter what, no matter how unreasonable I can be sometimes and no matter how difficult it gets.

I don't regret anything I've been through in the past, because it turned me into the person I am today, and no matter how cheesy that sounds, it's the truth, but I DO wish I took better care of my heart. I wish someone told me to protect it fiercely and never let anyone trample all over it. I wish I had someone tell me that knowing my self-worth was good enough and I didn't need the approval of any guy to make me believe it. I wish someone told me not to chase after that guy who obviously did not care about me, to stand up for myself when that other guy belittled my feelings and to run the opposite direction from men who were afraid of commitment.

The thing is, I know myself, and certain things I can't help. I know I love 100 % percent or nothing at all. There is no in-between, maybe, I'm not sure. I guess through the years, I have improved in my choices when it comes to men, but my innate desire to care for someone has remained. Sometimes I wish it was easy for me to just walk away from people, but I'm the type of person who will try until there's really nothing left to try for. Because of this, I wonder why I feel so up in the air lately. Is it really just OK to feel all this uncertainty sometimes? have I become jaded and afraid because of everything I've been through?

I'm rambling. I know, but I'm tired. This is probably the most open I've been on this blog regarding this subject matter and it's only because it's been on my mind lately. I had a conversation with Dane about this and we decided that the heart is a silly organ, not smart at all. All it knows is what it feels and nothing else matters, and because of this, it is up to us to find that healthy compromise between what we feel and what we want and deserve. I'm still learning, so if anyone has the answers, I'm always open to listen.

I guess this entry can be filed under health and fitness, albeit emotional instead of physical? Just say Yes :D

BOQUERONES EN VINAGRE #WIAT




Woke up a little on the homesickly side, and couldn't stop going through some of my photos from home. So this will be a delayed #WhatIAteToday feature, but I can't help but share it.

Boquerones are a tapas dish from the south of Spain.. Boquerones are fresh anchovies, and they are served cold, garnished with garlic, extra virgin olive oil, herbs and vinegar. I can probably eat an entire bucket of this stuff, it's so good..

The processing of the anchovies goes as follows: fresh anchovies are de-scaled and de-boned, then soaked in a salt and water bath for a few hours, before being soaked in white vinegar for a few more hours. The vinegar bleaches the meat, turning the Boquerones white. Best served on the beach, with a pint of ice cold beer!

GLUTEN-FREE #AllTheRage

Gluten is a protein found in wheat and similar products and is responsible for helping dough rise and give it it's chewy bite. Lately, the trendy thing to do is to say NO to gluten, but studies are showing that unless you have Celiac's Disease, which is an autoimmune disorder wherein gluten actually destroys the small intestine, or are gluten-intolerant, then a gluten-free diet is completely unnecessary. Symptoms  for Celiac's Disease include pain and discomfort, chronic fatigue, Diarrhea or constipation and Anemia.

So why are people buying into the gluten-free lifestyle? Many brands have jumped on this bandwagon and have started to advertise their products as gluten-free, giving people who don't really read about it the false impression that it is a health food and therefore promotes weight loss. Although there is nothing wrong with wanting to go healthier, in fact I'm all for it, make sure you read up on what you are planning to get into, and also ask your doctor if it would be good for you.

GOOD GIRL MASH (AKA CAULIFLOWER MASHED "POTATOES") #TuesdayTummy


So, you are trying your best to be healthy but you are craving for a big juicy steak. Beef is not the enemy while dieting and you can still have your steak and potatoes dinner once in awhile, only with a smaller serving of meat and cauliflower wearing a mashed potato costume.

When I get my mid-week carnivorous cravings, I more often than not give in, and no lean cuts either, I go full on rib eye, but I don't go overboard. I have about 3 oz of meat at probably around 200 calories and rub it with mustard, salt and pepper before pan frying with no oil. When the beef fat comes out, I add some garlic and sage for extra flavor. I already posted my steak recipe before ( http://www.fatkitch-skinnykitch.com/2014/07/steak-soulfoodsaturday.html)  just minus the butter out of the equation for a healthier option, so today I'll share my cauliflower mash recipe for lower carb content and less calories with your steak meal, because who can have a steak or a roast without mashed potatoes?

Ingredients:

1 head cauliflower, hard part removed and cut into little florets
pepper, to taste
2 teaspoons parmesan cheese
1/4 cup plain yogurt
1 clove garlic, chopped
1/2 teaspoon onion powder

How to:


  • Blanch cauliflower and pat dry.
  • While still hot, put in a food processor with all other ingredients.
  • Pulse until creamy. If too dry, add more yogurt.
  • Enjoy!

WARM MUSHROOM SALAD #ManicMonday


Even if I am known for my love of cooking and anything food related, there are also days when I don't want to cook, I don't want to eat out, but I also want a good meal, and no, fast food delivery is never an option unless I am drunk at 3 in the morning. On days like these, I end up making this warm mushroom salad, because it's quick and easy and it hits the spot. Plus, it's Monday after all, and I did write about "Meatless Mondays" last week. This meal gets your greens in, but it's also very filling, so it's perfect for those days you are super hungry but super lazy.

Ingredients:

1 cup mushrooms, sliced (I like button but the fresh ones are expensive here so a mix of shitake and oyster will do)
2 cups mixed greens
Handful of arugula (skip this if you are not a fan)
1 small onion, chopped
Green onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, chopped
1/4 cup Balsamic Vinegar
olive oil
Few dashes of liquid aminos (replacement for regular liquid seasoning)
a sprinkle of sugar
salt and pepper to taste
Shaved Pecorino or Parmesan Cheese

How to:


  • Saute onions, green onions (white part, save the green for garnish) and garlic
  • add mushrooms and cook until done
  • Add Balsamic Vinegar, Liquid Seasoning and sugar and cook down until reduced
  • Add salt and pepper to taste (Actually you can skip salt because the cheese is already salty, as is the liquid aminos)
  • Put mixed greens into a bowl and pour mushrooms over it.
  • Garnish with arugula and green onion.
  • Devour

FRUIT PIE GOODNESS #SoulfoodSaturday



Here is a cake I baked while I was in Spain. I won't lie to you, I didn't make the base from scratch.. it was a cake mix. Yes, I can be lazy at times. But there are some really good bases out there, and if you really want to make one from scratch, I can make you a recipe for that too.

Obviously, the kind of fruit you will use on your version, will depend on what's available to you. Here I used plums, peaches and kiwi. My little brother loved it so much, he had a second huge slice.

Top off with a drizzle. I used lemon juice mixed in with powdered sugar, and voila!

Ok, now I'm having crazy craving too, oh woe.

HOW THE SUN SEES YOU #Video





I stumbled upon this video, through facebook, and as a self-declared sun worshipper, it really hit the spot for me. Here in the Philippines, we are more afraid of "getting dark", than the actual condition of our skin. This video explains what sunscreen looks like, through a UV camera - you can really see how it can help block the harmful rays of the sun.

I'm mad about this video, I hope you guys will enjoy it.

OLD FASHIONED #TGIFToast

A big Thank You to Don Draper of Mad Men for binging the Old Fashioned back in fashion. This classic drink has been around for over a century and has been in and out of vogue over and over but it is definitely on the cool drink list again nowadays. It's super easy to make and definitely makes you feel like you are drinking a grown man/woman's drink. Here's how:

Ingredients:


  • A brown sugar cube or a teaspoon of loose brown sugar
  • 3 splashes of Angostura bitters
  • club soda
  • 2 oz Bourbon
  • a slice of orange, skin removed

How to:

  • Place sugar in a rocks glass
  • Add Angostura bitters
  • Muddle the orange slice and remove skin when finished.
  • Add a splash of club soda and pour in the bourbon and stir.
  • Add ice and serve.

SOUVENIRS FROM PARIS #TravelFeature

I'm not usually one to purchase "touristy" gifts, I'm really much more of a "I'm gonna bring you some cheese and chocolates from Europe" kinda gal. But the last time I was in Paris, I was busy rushing through my weekend, mainly focused on a boy, that I completely forgot to really take some time to find quirky little things around town to take home with me.

So, as requested by a readers, here is the loot I went home this time around.



On a beautiful sunny day in Montmartre, I picked up a few prints of pencil drawings of the famous sites of Paris. They were a steal at 6 Euros for 4, so I stocked up - now all I need are frames.


Stopping at every single souvenir shop on the Champs Elysees, digging for pretty post cards, I found one made of a collage of Amadeo Modigliani (1884 - 1920) portraits, and a bookmark of a Jean-Marc Nattier (1685 - 1766) painting of Louise-Marie de France, painted in 1748.


Approaching a new creative job, I figured it would be of absolute essence for me to kick off my role, surrounded by inspirational items. I got these two notebooks, the one on the left is mine, which I got at a book store near the Louvre, of a map of Paris from 1734 - 1739 and the one on the right I got for my twinso Erica at Chateau de Versailles, with pretty artwork of Marie-Antoinette.


One of my favorite purchases was a set of notebooks (showing how much of a geek I am) bound by plans of the gardens of the Castle of Versailles, as designed by renowned landscape architect Andre Le Notre in 1661.


During a quick stop at the massive Sephora on the Champs Elysees, I picked up a few cream body washes after being prompted by Erica, who was frustrated about not being able to buy her favorite chocolate flavored version.. she likes to smell like a cup of hot chocolate. I picked up a few of the Sephora shower creams, because I suffer from really dry skin, and this one is 50% moisturizing cream - a winner in my book.


I did ambition to send out some post cards (which never happened TBH) so I picked up more post cards at a souvenir shop on the Champs Elysees - of course Mona Lisa had to come with me!


Lastly, on the way out of France, at the airport, I got rid of my few remaining Euros by buying a box of cookies for Ornusa, some coasters for Carla and chocolates.. for me of course.

I hope this was a little bit like a mini trip to Paris for you.. I really quite miss it already, although the weather was terrible on my last weekend there. I swear, that was the last time I'm going to wear a leather jacket and a scarf in August in Europe! (I hope)

CHIA SEED PUDDING #TryThis



You've probably heard of Chia Seeds, or maybe you spotted them during your last visit to the health food store. You know it's healthy, but not sure exactly why or how to eat it. The little black seeds almost look like black sesame seeds, only smaller, and can be sprinkled on top of salads, incorporated into smoothies and baked goods, and turned into a delicious pudding, which is my personal favorite way to eat it. Before I share my recipe for Chia Pudding, let me run down a few benefits of having a daily dose of chia seeds.

1. An ounce of chia seeds is already equivalent to a third of your required dietary fibre, which is important to digestive health.
2. An ounce of chia seeds also contains 5 grams of omega-3 fatty acids. Before you panic, these are good fats, essential for brain health.
3. Chia seeds contain almost 30 percent of your body's daily requirement of Phosphorus and almost 20 percent of it's calcium needs, important for strong teeth and bones.
4. An ounce of Chia seeds contains 5.5 grams of protein, and no cholesterol. A great protein source for vegetarians and those watching their weight.
5.Chia seeds stabilize blood sugar and helps say goodbye to belly fat. YAY!
6. Chia seeds help make you feel full faster meaning, bye bye over eating.

Ok, do I need to give you any more reasons to at least give it a go? To start you off, here's my favorite Chia Pudding recipe. It's super easy and I usually have it for breakfast, about 30 minutes before a workout, or as a post-work out snack. Heck, have it whenever you want.



CHIA PUDDING

Ingredients:

3/4 cup coconut milk (replace with soy or almond milk)
1/4 cup buko juice (If using coconut milk, otherwise use 1 cup soy or almond milk)
1/4 cup chia seeds
1 tsp vanilla extract
Honey, to taste

How to:

Mix all the ingredients together in a jar and store in the refrigerator overnight. It should be a nice gel-like substance the next day. This is usually enough for 2-3 servings. What I like to do is mix fruits and nuts into it. When I use coconut milk, I add pineapple for a pina colada flavored pudding, sometimes I add cocoa powder before putting in the fridge and then top it off with mint. The choice is yours! ENJOY!

A TYPICAL BREAKFAST #WIAT (What I Ate Today)


People are always asking me for my meal plans to complement a proper fitness routine. I don't really have any set meal plans, but I know I will always make sure I have healthy options on hand, so it becomes kind of a no brainer for me to eat healthy food. For instance, I always start my day with fruits, whether in smoothie form, or through my banana-oat bran pancakes (posted the recipe on a Thursday a few weeks ago) and never a typical silog breakfast or anything heavy, because I realized it sets the tone for the rest of my day, and makes me feel sick to have all that oil and too much rice too early in the morning.

So this would be a typical breakfast for me- whatever fruits are available, in this case, it's usually tropical fruits as a lot of berries sold here are mad expensive (a small pack of blueberries for P500? NO THANKS!) topped with a tablespoon of chia seeds, a tablespoon of wheat germ and half a cup of  plain or Greek yogurt. If I wanna add a little more sweetness, I add half a tablespoon of Agave syrup or Pure honey. When available, I will probably add almonds or cashew nuts on top too. Voila! Instant, easy to put together, no excuses healthy breakfast! Good Morning!

LIKE A BOY #LikeSo

It always seems as if girls have the best choices when it comes to clothes, mostly because we have the most choices, but in my opinion, what guys don't have in options, is made up for in awesomeness. I LOVE men's clothes, because when they are nice, they are SUPER nice, and I believe that any woman who can pull off menswear with ease and look super sexy in it holds the key to the universe. That said, not every woman can channel Annie Hall completely and look fabulous, but still want to wear that chambray shirt they love on their boyfriend, but will probably love more on themselves, or think that their man's jeans would look great with that silk backless tank top they just bought. The button down black chambray top I'm wearing above is from the Men's section of Oxygen, but I could not resist buying it!

A few things to remember if you are new to the girl's wearing boy's clothes game:

1. Don't go all out BOY. Remember that balance is key so dress that chambray shirt with a girly dress and heels, but reel it back to man-land with a cute unisex hat. 

2. Make sure it still looks like it fits. Although the point is to go a little bit oversized, you still need to find clothes that fit you, albeit a size big. Most of the time, I can get away with a Men's XS or S, for clothes that fit easy and are super comfortable.

3. Wear heels. When sporting men's clothes, such as trousers or boyfriend jeans, make it super sexy with a pair of stilettos. It's all about contrasts.

4. Add cute boy inspired pieces such as suspenders to your wardrobe. They are a cute addition and great for subtle accessorizing. 

5. Have fun with it! Ignore everything I said above if you want to and go all out incognito if that's what you feel like doing. I mean, it worked for TLC and Aaliyah in the 90's so why not?

FLAX SEED #AllTheRage



Flax seed has been around, since the days of Babylon. It's healing powers were already known, even back then.. and it is only now, in the days of all-Organic and health crazes, that we have finally jumped on the bandwagon. Flax seed has components, that are essential to us humans. Gone are the days, when just popping a Vitamin C pill in the morning, was enough. What we are discovering in superfoods, as well, make healthy eating and cooking an instant new adventure.

Flax seed contains:

  • Omega 3 essential fatty acids - are something we desperately need, with healing qualities for a healthy heart, skin and nails
  • Lignans - rich in antioxidants
  • Fiber - important and essential for a healthy digestion
On top of all that, studies show that Flax seed, may help protect you from cancer. That alone, is something to seriously aim for, in this day and age, when we seem to be coming up with new kinds of illnesses, every day.

I usually add Flax to my shakes, granola, and an endless amount of other recipes, which YES, I shall share with you all asap!

CHICKEN QUINOA SUSHI #TuesdayTummy



Always on the hunt for low-cal & organic recipes during diet-season (post vacation to me) - a little trip to the supermarket turned into a mission to come up with ways to still eat the food that I love, without feeling guilty. With a newly stocked up supply of superfood Quinoa, I figured, how hard can it be to come up with an alternative to my fave carbo bomb, sushi?

By the way, for all those who are like, but why should I make my own sushi, but its gonna be a hassle, but how do I even do that?? You can purchase a rolling mat in most major supermarkets, I got mine at SM, including the sheet of nori. It's very affordable, and trust me, it is worth the minimal hassle.

I will post a step by step on how to use a rolling mat in another post, but for now here's what I had for lunch today. And for dinner. And for two more snacks in between, just because I worked my butt on the mat today, and I deserve it, and because hello zero guilt! Not to mention the fact that quinoa is emerging the obvious winner in comparison to evil white rice, haha.

INGREDIENTS


  • fresh chicken breast, cut into strips, baked in oven
  • avocado (my faaaaaave!)
  • slightly overcooked (and cooled) Quinoa
  • nori

PREPARATION

Generally, it doesn't really get any less stressful than this. You lay out the sheet of nori on the mat and slightly wet one half. Spread out the Quinoa on the sheet, gently pressing down to create a compact layer of Quinoa. Lay out the ingredients in a line, careful to fill gaps. ROLL

BASIC STRETCHING #HowTo

If there is one thing I truly believe in, more than cardio, more than weights and more than any other exercise on the planet, it is the power and importance of STRETCHING. Every single trainer and instructor I've ever worked out with has stressed that if there is one thing I should be doing for my body every single day, it's to stretch it for at least thirty minutes. Though I am not so strict about the thirty minute time frame, I DO make sure I get even just my basic stretches in for the day with some easy yoga poses like the cat/cow stretch and upward/downward facing dog poses.

Why is stretching so important, you might be asking right now. Well, here are a few benefits of a daily stretch:

  • Helps improve flexibility, which in turn gives you a wider range when you move your body while working out.
  • Helps correct your posture.
  • Helps with blood flow to the muscles.
  • Helps calm the mind and body.
  • Releases tension.
What to remember when Stretching:
  • Do a short warm up prior to stretching because stretching cold muscles might actually be more harmful than helpful.
  • Stretch slowly and carefully and hold for about 30-45 seconds to loosen tight muscles.
  • Breathe properly while stretching and don't micro-bounce as they can cause small tears in your muscles.
  • Make sure your stretches don't hurt, but each time, try to go a little deeper than last.





TUNA PAPAYA ROLLS #ManicMonday



I have to warn you, I am on a diet.. so most of my food posts will be yummy, but healthy. Coming home from a month in Europe, and my jeans are screaming for help. We've all been there, admit it. But I embrace times like these, because my creative juices are called out to flow, and I can think out of the box and invent, and reinvent healthier versions of my favorite recipes - culinary indulgence without the guilt.

I personally love making wraps, because it's oh-so uncomplicated, and you can add your favorites and subtract ingredients you don't favor. This meal took about 3 seconds to make, and its as easy as ABC. Who doesn't love a lazy little recipe!


INGREDIENTS

  • lettuce
  • cream cheese
  • dijon mustard
  • fresh papaya
  • canned tuna
  • flour tortillas

PREPARATION

  • (I don't toast the tortilla, before using it, because once it cools, it becomes crunchy, which just ruins the rolling process)
  • Lay out flour tortilla, and start assembling.
  • You have to remember that you can't pack as much into the roll, because it will become uneven, and will be hard to cut up into pieces.
  • Place all your ingredients along the center of the tortilla, careful to distribute it, so you don't leave gaps.
  • Roll up tightly all the way.
  • Cut.

How easy was that?!

PILATES #WOOTW (Work Out Of The Week)


I'm surprised I never tried Pilates prior to trying out the classes at One Life Studio. I was a gymnast half my life and it only seemed natural to be drawn to it because of all the stretching and the core strength you need for the work out. Unsurprisingly, I loved it immediately and I have been going regularly for a few weeks now.

A little background on Pilates for those who aren't too familiar.


  • Anyone can do Pilates because the exercises are adjustable, so you will find athletes doing Pilates, as well as those with injuries and even older people.

ROAST CHICKEN DINNER #SoulFoodSaturday



On weekends, I throw away all caution and eat whatever I want. By whatever, I mean that I will put that extra pat of butter in my food, have that extra scoop of ice cream just because, and possibly have a bottle of wine all to myself.

I had my old flatmate and friend over for dinner over the weekend and 13 years ago, she was the official cook of our condo, while I could barely boil a pot of water properly. We don't see each other much and she wanted to try my cooking so I willingly obliged. I decided to go for something simple but delicious- Roast Chicken! There are so many ways you can prepare a roast chicken, so many spices and herbs that you can add to flavor the bird, but my one big secret to make sure it's always SUPER good is that I ALWAYS use fresh herbs. Oh, two secrets, I also always find a way to incorporate butter into the equation.

For this roast, I chopped some tarragon, sage, basil and garlic and mixed it in with half a stick of butter (1/4 of the bar- salted please) I then stuffed the butter under the chicken's skin, by the breast, the legs and even under and put the rest of it into the cavity, along with a head of garlic cut in half, some shallots, and more of the herbs I added to the butter and half a lemon. I poured some olive oil on the chicken, added salt and pepper  and left it to marinate for about 6 hours.

I preheated my oven on a low heat setting and cooked this baby for and hour and a half, before I cranked it up and removed the foil to cook it for another hour. Oh remember to add some chicken broth and/or white wine to the dish you are cooking it in, as well as some roughly chopped carrots, potatoes and shallots.

CELETEQUE BACK ACNE SPRAY #BeautyBuzz

We all thought we'd stop getting zits after high school then those annoying little buggers decide to come back later in life, and not even just on our face, but sometimes on our backs! I recently went off the pill, and my doctor already warned me of the side effects with one of them being that I might start breaking out. I noticed my skin being oilier than usual and some zits appearing on my face. I was relieved when they say goodbye, until i started noticing some of them popping up on my back! I wanted to cry! I'm in my thirties, I should not have to worry about these things!

I found this product from Celeteque called Acne Solutions Back Acne Spray and decided to give it a go. Although I would not call what I have acne, the few stubborn zits that have decided to make my back their home was starting to really annoy me.



I used it for 3/4 days after taking a shower and before going to bed. You simply have to spray the solution on the affected area and dry before putting clothes on. I felt a slight tingle when I sprayed it on my zits, but on the 3rd day, I definitely saw results.

Back pimples are so not sexy and so relieved I found this product. Everyone should have it in their kikay closets (Yes, I have a closet, don't judge!) in case of emergency!

I hear way too many of my friends complain about not being beer drinkers - I honestly don't understand it. As a 10 year old, in Germany, my class went to a Bavarian brewery, to learn about the process of making beer. Years later, and I am still a fan. A good shandy, now that I am in Europe, is a great refresher on a hot summer day. And it is so easy, so so easy to make.

HOW TO CHOOSE A HAT THIS SEASON #HowTo



A hat lover myself, I am constantly asked about how to wear a chic hat, without looking overdressed. As we try to survive this seasons onslaught of moody monsoon madness, and all the rain it brings, we are left with more choices in terms of dressing up an outfit by adding accessories. These are my favorite hats and looks of the season. Don't be afraid to mix hi+lo, and patterns, and switch things up with some color. A hat is a great way to hide a bad hair day, but it is also fun to play with different hair styles to enhance a look. The bottom line is, it's a hat! Have a little fun with it.. extra points for those who can pull off a red beret, since I am still reeling in my Paris trip.. which I'm about to exit, as my flight is boarding!

TRAIN LIFE #TravelFeature


Last year, I did a two month Europe trip and got a barrage of questions when I got back about how to travel for that long without purchasing any plane tickets and completely on the fly. Well, it was not "on the fly" as it's usually defined but we did purchase our train tickets only a few days in advance, and when that was not possible, we would make sure to show up at the station bright and early to purchase on the day of.

Many people have their reservations about traveling Europe completely via train, but after experiencing it, I realized that although it will be less travel time if you fly everywhere, but I like the quiet time I get on a five hour train ride. I like looking at parts of the country that I never would have seen had I chosen to fly. While on the way to Berlin, my siblings and I saw this amazingly beautiful, quaint village, one whose name unfortunately escapes me, but it's something we never would have even knew existed if we were up in the air.

Sometimes, it is less expensive to book plane tickets, but for long trips such as the one we took, and because we circled Europe and stopped in 12 cities, we felt that purchasing a Eurail pass each would make more sense. The Eurail pass is not your actual ticket, and you will still have to reserve one, or at times purchase but for a minimal fee, but it gives you the freedom to get on and off trains as you please depending on the type of pass you get. There's one that allows you a certain number of trips within two countries, one that allows you unlimited travel for two months within all the EU states, and some other types in between. It's up to you to choose one that suits your travel needs. We got the two month unlimited one and purchased our tickets along the way.

The good thing about taking trains is that, as long as you have your ticket, you can show up at the platform 2 minutes before it leaves. There's no immigrations, no checking in and out, no waiting for your luggage and there's actually plenty of legroom and walking space. Plus, you can bring your own bottled water in, no problem, woohoo! Like I said earlier, you get some quiet time as you watch the world go by and for some reason, being on a train for five or six hours is not as tiring as being on an airplane for the same amount of time.

Now the downside. Well, because there are no immigrations and security checks, there is a big chance that the train might actually leave you, even if you are just one minute late. Except for the odd delay, European trains, from my experience, leave on time, and with no warning. There will be no announcements when passengers are missing from the train and no one on the loudspeaker reminding you to wait by your platform because your ride is leaving in ten minutes. Having said this, it is not the train's fault, but your responsibility to make sure you are where you need to be, when you need to be there. Another downside is if you don't book early, especially during peak season, you might get bumped off your section and put somewhere else. For instance, we had First Class Eurail passes, meaning, we could have gotten a private room to sleep in on our only overnight ride from Vienna to Venice, but since we were not able to book early enough, we had to settle for a shared room with people we did not know. It was not bad, but some people might not like the idea of it.




Training around Europe is definitely the ideal way to travel for me and I would do it all over again. The only reason I would fly now is if I had a limited amount of time and more than two cities to go to. MEATLESS MONDAY #AllTheRage


Meatless Monday is a movement started in 2003 in association with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in an effort to help people have better health and help save the planet at the same time. A few years after the US launched this program, Belgium followed suit, and the the UK> Today there are 34 countries actively taking part in this movement, and guess what, the Philippines is part of it! 

It's simple, all you must do is refrain from eating meat once a week. it can be any day of the week, but just to make it easier, having one consistent day, such a Monday (and Meatless Monday is catchy too!) First of all, one day of eating all fruits and veggies won't hurt you, in fact it's great for your health! According to a Harvard University study, refraining from meat once a week decreases the risk of heart disease by 19% and also reduce the risk of diabetes. It's also good for the environment because it reduces the amount of fossil fuel used to raise livestock, making it win-win for everyone.  For more information on this movement, check out www.meatlessmonday.com

JAEGERSCHNITZEL WITH EGG SPAETZLE #WIAT


After the wedding, I had one last day in Munich before hopping an overnight train to Paris.. I, of course, chose to spend this rainy and chilly day, doing what you're supposed to do when you have one day in Bavaria - eat lots of food, and drink lots of beer. Heeeeelll yea.

A Jägerschnitzel is a pork dish served with lots of gravy and mushrooms, and with a side of Eierspätzle, which is the weird middle brother of a dumpling and a noodle, and tastes like you died and went to cholesterol heaven. Of course this meal was served with my third pint of Weißbier (light German beer) - naturally. 

I will try to come up with a little intro-recipe for a similar dish, as following the actual traditional way of cooking it will be near impossible with all the ingredients missing, but I promise it will be just as delish. This, ladies and gents, is why I feel at home in Germany.. This and the endless supply of beers obviously. Mahlzeit

TOP 5 BEAUTY HACKS #LikeSo



I get loads of questions about beauty, but keep them coming. Here are my personal faves of the moment, 5 beauty hacks for the girl on the go!


  1. MATTIFY YOUR LIPSTICK - Place a tissue over your lips and dust lightly with matte powder, for a lippie that stays.
  2. MATTE SKIN - Instead of caking on more powder at the first sign of oiliness, use a tissue and blot - if you need more help, use a loose powder and dust your T-Zone lightly.
  3. DIY LIP SCRUB - Combine your favorite pot of lip balm with some brown sugar and use it to get the flakiness out of your pout. For a little plumper, add a hint of cinnamon!
  4. THICK LASHES - This is one of my favorite party tricks. Apply one coat of mascara, then dust baby powder on your lashes using an eyeshadow brush. Apply two more coats of mascara, and you have yourself some falsies without having to deal with tweezers and glue.
  5. NO SLIP BOBBY PINS - I use loads of pins, since my hair is growing out. To keep them from slipping off, place them on a paper towel, and spray them with hair spray. The spray will keep them on all day.

VEGAN ICE CREAM #TuesdayTummy


When I posted this on Instagram last week, it piqued the interest of quite a few people, and some of my friends on Facebook were even asking me if I wanted to sell them some. The thing is, making Vegan ice cream is so ridiculously EASY that I would feel like I was robbing people if I sold it. Seriously. ANYONE, whether a foodie or not, whether handy in the kitchen or not can make this because it only has ONE ingredient.

BANANAS.

Yes. That's it. I made ice cream purely out of bananas, and the secret is that you have to make sure they are frozen before you make this. You can add in stuff, like i put in chopped dates, cinnamon and vanilla extract, but the base is really just frozen bananas. Isn't that, well, BANANAS? (Sorry for the corny pun!) Anyway, here's how to get super creamy banana vegan ice cream. It looks and feels EXACTLY like real ice cream, it's crazy! I'm so excited because it was definitely a revelation for me. I was so excited when I made my first batch. It's a great, healthy alternative to regular ice cream, and although I probably will not replace the real thing for this completely (I'm sorry, I do love ice cream to much) this is something I can eat everyday! I get a serving of fruit in, plus it's disguised as dessert and it's super duper tres delicieux!

Ingredients:

Banana (plus any other fruits, nuts, whatever you wanna mix in towards the end)

How to:


  • Cut two bananas into coin sized pieces and freeze overnight.
  • Place frozen banana in a food processor and pulse. It will look weird and grainy at first but keep going until it becomes smooth and creamy.
  • When smooth and creamy, add your mix-ins. Strawberries are good, as well as nuts, or even a scoop of nutella or peanut butter. This is where you can keep it healthy or go wild. 
  • Mix with a spatula or wooden spoon.
  • At this point, you can eat your ice cream and it will have the consistency of soft serve, but if you want it more like scooped ice cream, put it in a container and back in the freezer for a few more hours.
  • Once frozen, place a couple of scoops in a bowl and enjoy! I like mine with a tablespoon of melted peanut butter!

LAST MINUTE EGG SCRAMBLES #ManicMonday

When I need to use leftovers, or when it's almost grocery day but I don't want to waste bits and pieces  of stuff I have in the fridge or pantry, I mix and match, add an egg and voila, instant filling meal! Don't worry about making this all fancy like the restaurant style omelettes, ain't nobody got time for that on a Manic Monday! My secret is that I always keep different spices in my pantry and at least 2 kinds of fresh herbs in the fridge to easily add to whatever I'm making. The results are easy, gourmet tasting, fast food without having to resort to fast food. Here are three of my favorites. The instructions for all of them are to fry them all together and add the egg until scrambled. That's it.

1. Seafood Scramble

  • Smoked Clams, 1/4 can.
  • Canned Tuna, 1/2 can
  • Smoked Paprika
  • Salt and Pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon cream cheese
  • Squeeze of lemon
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 eggs
2. Roast Chicken Scramble (aka Leftovers Scramble)
  • Shredded leftover roast chicken, 100 grams
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh sage, rosemary, basil and tarragon, or any combination of these herbs.
  • Roasted tomatoes, 1/4 cup
  • Parmesan Cheese, 1 tbs.
  • 1 egg plus 1 egg white.
3. Veggie Scramble
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 3 large shitake mushrooms, chopped
  • basil leaves
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • Parmesan Cheese, 1 tbs
  • 1 egg plus 1 egg white

7 GOLDEN RULES OF DIETING #HowTo



I really hate the word "diet". I feel like, if I'm going to commit to shedding a few pounds, I have a much harder time following an actual regime.. rules are made to be broken. So instead, I make small adjustments, just to make sure I won't be constantly reminded that I am dieting, which is what always leads me back to failing on my missions. Here are easy tips to remember, when you're trying to slim down.


  1. SLEEP WELL - They say that beauty sleep should be 8 hours long. It is also a well known fact that happy people have an easier time sticking to a diet.. stress and unhappiness will cause you to snack on unhealthy food. But in order to produce the brain chemicals your body needs to "be happy", you have to allow it lots of rest. I myself don't normally sleep more than 6 hours, which works for me.. but on weekends, I make up for it with 8 hour "naps". 
  2. SAY NO TO UNNECESSARY SUGAR - Skip the soda, the bottled juices, pastries etc. Drink water instead (sparkling water if you need some fizz). If you have to have some sugar, snack on low-cal fruit, or slap some organic honey on something. Drink your rums on the rocks, and drink your coffee black and choose the non-sugary cereal - save the sweet for your cheat-days.
  3. DRINK A WARM GLASS OF WATER WITH A LEMON IN THE MORNING - This is a well-known supermodel trick, but I still don't know many people who apply this rule. Drinking a warm glass of lemon-water will help jumpstart your digestive system, encouraging your body to break down your daily food intake more effectively.
  4. SAY NO TO SALT - Salt is the bane of your existence. you must know this! It retains water, leaving you bloated and heavy. Find a replacement spice you like (I use cayenne pepper) - skipping the salt doesn't mean your food will have to taste bland. Vinegar is also a great way to add some flavor, instead of using salt.
  5. WALK WHENEVER YOU CAN - If you need to get some starbucks, which is 4 blocks away, don't drive, walk. Same goes for the bank.. and also, shopping can totally be cardio. Just sayin'. Don't be lazy. Sweat won't kill you.
  6. EAT SLOWLY - Wolfing your food down is fun, especially when you are nearing starvation. But it won't do anything for your metabolism. Chew your food properly and take your time to enjoy it. Your body needs time to register an incoming meal. Also, eating slowly will fill your craving quicker, you will feel full and satisfied with the dish, cutting down the chances of you actually wanting to eat more.
  7. PREPARE YOUR OWN FOOD - whenever I am in a rush, and stressed out and don't have time to find something decent to eat, I reach for the junk food. It's normal, and completely unhealthy. Take 15 minutes in the mornings to prepare yourself something healthy to eat for lunch. If you have a turkey bagel sandwich or a greek salad in your bag, chances are, you won't want to have the McDonalds fried chicken meal. And some ice cream.

CAFE DE FLORE #TGIFToast


Rocket Room is one of my favorite watering holes. The food from Stella next door is always good, the drinks are creative and consistent and the music always keeps me happy. Last night, I hosted an event called Back to the 90's, which happens every first Thursday of the month (shameless plug, haha!) and my go to is usually wine or this wine cocktail called A Very Passionate Affair, which has a vanilla vodka, passion fruit liqueur and topped off with sparkling wine. I looked at their menu last night and noticed they had some new drinks! Not one to travel too far outside my favorites, I found one with Creme de Cassis (used in my MOST favorite drink in the world-KIR ROYALE) elderflower and lemon with a gin (or vodka, argh sorry I got tipsy and forgot!) base.

The drink was nice and light, but effective. It kind of reminded me of a cosmopolitan but more sophisticated and the one complaint i have (and only because i drink a lot) is that I wish there was more of the drink in each order. If you are into girly drinks, this one is for you. It's something you can sip on and for those with a low tolerance, it might be enough to give you a nice, happy buzz.

MIXED PRINTS #TrendyThursday

Back then mixing prints was a total no-no! Stripes and polka dots? People would immediately cry Fashion Victim! Nowadays, the fashion world is not only more forgiving towards mis-matched prints, but embraces it like a long lost child.

Scared to leave your comfort zone? Start off with monochromatic prints like the bottom right picture. The all black and white ensemble is the perfect way to ease your way into the world of mixed prints. Another way is to match dainty florals with nautical stripes. The effect still spells classic without being too basic or predictable. Later on, mix and match as you please. Plaid and polka dots? Sure! Geometric and Floral? Score!

WHY I AM A TRAVELLER #Feature



“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” 



Whenever I announce to my friends, that I am going on a trip, I am always met with the same reactions. On one hand, you have the typical "Again?!", on the other a half sarcastic snarl "You're so lucky" and then of course, there is the much-heard "I wish I could afford to travel as much as you do". Traveling is a habit I share with one of my best friends, Erica. We spend so much time day-dreaming about upcoming destinations, and revisiting old places of memories, and on an almost daily basis, we concoct ridiculous ploys in the hope of being led back towards racking up our air miles. The minute we arrive, there's 5 minutes of "It's good to be home" followed by a predictable "I wanna leave again!" We have seemingly succumbed to our adventurous souls and the desire to constantly discover new loves and new lives.

One of the questions I have been hearing lately, is: "What are you running from?" I blame this completely on my inability to make a relationship work, my self-enslavement towards my perfect career plans, and my adopted tick of complaining about life like a French man. My escapades suddenly look like rushed escapes, brought on by lack of content and wish to be one with the world, and by one, I mean, to be on my own, listening to my own silence.

But I beg to disagree.

I do not travel to run away from life, but to run towards it.

I have always seen the world in the most extreme of all lights. When I am crying in my bed, because a boy broke my heart, I can hear thunder and rainstorms in my heart, and my insides sob with me, writhing in pain. When I am ecstatic because I just got promoted, or my new shoes arrived in the mail, I want to hug someone until they are giggling out of exasperation, and possibly lack of oxygen to their brain, and I like to roll around in bed, squealing in delight, a smile threatening to take over all the space on my head. I feel everything to the extreme or nothing at all.

I travel, because I can feel these things more intensely, and I can enjoy them, without the noise and the old phone ring of my phone in the back-ground, demanding my deadlines, or worse, asking me to work on a sunday. I travel, because a glass of red wine simply tastes better on a roof-top in Paris, or on the coast of southern Spain. I travel because standing in the middle of a packed airport terminal, in the winter, in Amsterdam, makes me feel absolutely tiny, insignificant but alive. I travel because it teaches me about people, cultures, histories, traditions and morals, and it makes me more aware of my own self. I travel because I am curious about the man in a Moroccan medina, tanning leather while whistling, and the little curly-haired child, bouncing his legs off his high-seat in Munich, ready to grab a breadstick with his chubby little fingers, to try to shove the entire piece in his mouth vertically. I travel because it makes sense of my life, just by my breathing everything in, and not much else at all. 

But mostly, I travel, because of love. Love for a place I had whiskey sours at in Paris, love for the smell of red chicken curry from a street vendor in Bangkok, and love for my baby brother, when he bombards me with hugs, as soon as I walk in the door, only to follow them up with some digging for chocolate in my half-opened suitcase. 

The best part about traveling, is that it is an opportunity to discover love, for all things in life, even loves we thought couldn't exist, like people and places. Travel is the best way to discover the world, while finding what we all struggle to find, all the time.. Ourselves.
